The Problems and Needs of Organic Rice Farmers in Nueva Vizcaya
Abstract
Organic rice farming protects the environment and the health of the farmers and stakeholders. Despite its positive effects and the government's training, seminars, and projects, only a few farmers are still engaged in organic rice farming. Knowing and addressing their challenges may encourage more farmers to go on organic farming. This research identified the organic rice farmers’ problems and proposed measures based on encountered problems and needs. The paper used a combination of qualitative and quantitative approaches. Most problems faced by the farmers were insect pests, insufficient budget, typhoons, yield reduction, and diseases, among others. Their proposed measures were to put scare devices to drive away pests, coordinate farming, proper management of finances, market outlets, convince conventional farmers to shift to organic farming and ask for support from the government. Moreover, their needs were financial assistance, training and seminars, mini-millers, organic certification, and organic fertilizers. The challenges encountered by the farmers could be the bases of the government and nongovernment organizations to develop appropriate programs.
