The Research, Development, and Extension (RDE) Office of Negros Oriental State University, in collaboration with the Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA) and the National Museum of the Philippines-Dumaguete, visited ๐๐ข๐ฏ๐ข๐บ ๐๐ฏ๐ต๐ฐ๐ฏ๐ช๐ข โ๐๐ช๐ฏ๐บ๐ข๐ฏ๐จโ ๐๐ข๐ณ๐ฐ at Barangay Calayugan, Valencia, Negros Oriental. She is recognized as the last master artisan in the community who still practices and can teach the entire process of ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐โa traditional method for softening and finishing ๐ด๐ช๐ฏ๐ข๐ฎ๐ข๐บ (๐ข๐ฃ๐ข๐ค๐ข ๐ธ๐ฆ๐ข๐ท๐ฆ) into a finely textured fabric. This labor-intensive method reflects not only technical expertise but also a rich cultural heritage passed down through generations. Despite its cultural and economic significance, this technique is now at risk due to a declining number of practitioners and a growing shift towards modern, mechanized production. Through this visit, the RDE Office and the collaborating agencies aim to document the process, preserve indigenous knowledge, and find ways to revitalize the local fiber industry by supporting artisans like Nanay Minyang Waro. Those who personally witnessed and experienced the meticulous and engaging pinakang technique were ๐๐ณ. Vice President for Research, Development, and Extension; ๐๐ณ. ๐๐ต๐ช๐ญ๐ญ๐ฐ, Community Extension and Services Director; Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA)โ๐๐ขโ๐ข๐ฎ ๐๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ข ๐. Provincial Fiber Officer PhilFIDA-Negros Oriental with her colleague; and RDE staffโ๐๐ด.

The University recently hosted the dynamic workshop โ๐๐ณ๐ช๐ต๐ช๐ฏ๐จ ๐๐ถ๐ฎ๐ข๐จ๐ถ๐ฆ๐ต๐ฆ ๐ข๐ฏ๐ฅ ๐๐ฆ๐จ๐ณ๐ฐ๐ด ๐๐ณ๐ช๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ต๐ข๐ญ: ๐๐ญ๐ข๐ค๐ฆ, ๐๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ณ๐บ, ๐ข๐ฏ๐ฅ ๐๐ถ๐ญ๐ต๐ถ๐ณ๐ฆ,โ the first installment of the ๐๐ ๐ ๐๐ฌ๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐ฒ๐ ๐ฌ๐ ๐๐ฎ๐ ๐ฅ๐๐ฌ: ๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ข๐ญ๐๐ซ๐๐ซ๐ฒ ๐๐ซ๐ญ๐ฌ ๐๐ซ๐๐๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐ ๐๐จ๐ซ๐ค๐ฌ ๐๐จ๐ซ๐ค๐ฌ๐ก๐จ๐ฉ ๐๐๐ซ๐ข๐๐ฌ, held at Rovira Suites, Dumaguete City. This activity was spearheaded by the ๐๐ซ๐๐๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐ ๐๐จ๐ซ๐ค๐ฌ ๐๐ง๐ข๐ญ of Research, Development and Extension (RDE) Office under the leadership and support of ๐๐ณ. Vice President for Research, Development and Extension; and ๐๐ณ. University Research and Development Director, gathering literature enthusiasts across NORSU campuses to explore how stories rooted in local places and personal memories can shape meaningful literary works.
The workshop formally opened with welcoming remarks from ๐๐ณ๐ฐ๐ง. Creative Works Unit Head, who warmly welcomed participants and shared the vision and roadmap for the workshop series. Participants were then provided with selected readings from the published works of the guest speaker and lead workshop facilitator, ๐๐ณ๐ฐ๐ง. ๐๐ข๐ฏ ๐๐ฐ๐ด๐ข๐ญ๐ฆ๐ด ๐๐ข๐ด๐ฐ๐ค๐ฐ๐ต, an award-winning writer/author as well as a faculty member of Silliman University, allowing them to engage with his stories as inspiration before the workshop proper begins. These readings encouraged participants to reflect on their hometowns and experiences, letting them craft stories that amplify their voices and celebrate the rich cultural narratives of their communities.
During the lecture sessions, ๐๐ณ๐ฐ๐ง. ๐๐ข๐ด๐ฐ๐ค๐ฐ๐ต guided participants through structuring their drafts piece by piece, highlighting key elements of creative writing. He emphasized the importance of engaging the sensesโhow a writer sees, touches, tastes, hears, and smells the world around them to vividly capture places and memories, while avoiding too much abstraction and leaning more on concretizing. Through this immersive approach, participants learned how everyday experiences and familiar landscapes can be transformed into compelling literary pieces that bring the stories of Dumaguete and Negros Oriental, especially their own hometowns, to life.
The workshop concluded with the creation of the participantsโ final drafts, connecting all the pieces theyโve created for each lecture, which they will submit and be critiqued by the resource speaker. Creative Works Unit Head, delivered a heartfelt message to the participants and guest expert for their genuine passion, active participation, and unending support for this activity. Furthermore, a certificate of recognition and a token of appreciation were presented to ๐๐ณ๐ฐ๐ง. ๐๐ข๐ด๐ฐ๐ค๐ฐ๐ต to express the sincerest gratitude for his willingness to share his time and expertise with the participants.
Stay tuned for the next exciting workshops in the Mga Istorya sa Buglas series and join us as we keep turning hometown memories into unforgettable literary adventures.
