Negros Oriental State University (NORSU) Main Campus II hosted a significant event today, May 6, 2026: the 1st International Dialogue. Under the theme "Global Minds, Local Impact: Exchange Student Stories," the gathering served as a bridge between local academic pursuits and the vast opportunities of the international stage. Spearheaded by Ms. Stella Marie V. Llera, MBM-HTM, Unit Head of the Office of Foreign/International Student Services, under the office of Student Development Services with its Director, Mr Julio E. Ventolero, MTE, MMM, this initiative brought together student leaders and experts to discuss the transformative power of cross-border academic exposure.
The event featured a diverse lineup of speakers, ranging from geologists and educators to government officials, all focused on the transformative power of cross-border collaboration and cultural exchange.
Dr. Cesar P. Estrope, Vice President for Student Affairs & Services, delivered the welcome remarks, followed by an inspirational message from Dr. Ryan O. Tayco, Campus Director.
The morning was dedicated to the lived experiences of those who have stepped beyond their borders:
Student Exchange Insights: John Michael Ausejo, M.Sc., shared his journey titled "A Geologist’s Singapore Story: 3 Weeks That Shaped a Global Mindset." He highlighted how even short-term international exposure can fundamentally shift one's professional perspective.
The Volunteer Perspective: Ms. Gertrud Lykke Jessen presented "Why I Chose NORSU: A Volunteer’s Journey Across Continents," offering a unique look at how the university is perceived by international volunteers.
Faculty Exchange: Representing the academic staff, Dr. Eugene Calingacion. SPED Teacher in Illiinois, USA, discussed his transition from the Philippines to the USA in his talk, "From NORSU to the USA: An Educator’s Journey Through Faculty Exchange."
The morning concluded with an interactive Q&A session, allowing attendees to dive deeper into the logistics and emotional realities of international exchange.
In the afternoon, the dialogue shifted toward the institutional and regional structures that support internationalization:
Education & Tourism: Dr. Evelyn Flores Lupango, Commissioned by DOT-R7 on "Education Tourism " project, discussed the intersection of global standards and local tourism, specifically focusing on bringing the world to Region 7.
Governmental Support: The Department of Tourism (NIR) was represented by Regional Director Crisanta Marlene Rodriguez, who outlined regional policies and opportunities for the youth.
The Path to Mobility: Dr. Danebeth G. Narzoles, Chief Education Program Specialist of CHED Regional Office VI, provided a roadmap for students, explaining the various pathways for student and faculty mobility.
On behalf of Dr. Craig N. Refugio, Director of University International Relations, Mr. Jeremy C. Teves, delivered the closing remarks.
