The launching today of the first Metals and Engineering Innovation Center (MEIC) located at the Negros Oriental State University (NORSU) Main Campus in Dumaguete City was well attended by senior officials from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) headed by Secretary Renato U. Solidum, Jr,.
At the beginning of the program, Robert O. Dizon, the Executive Director of the DOST Metals and Industry Research and Development Center, provided a summary of the project. MEIC is a project focused on enhancing the metals and engineering sectors in the Philippines. MEICs are created by the DOST in collaboration with state universities and colleges (SUCs).
The MEIC in Negros Oriental was fortunate to be established through the efforts of Engr. Jesus F. Zamora, Jr., CESO III, DOST 7 Regional Director, who nominated NORSU.
Moreover, Engr. Rowen R. Gelonga, CESO II and OIC Regional Director of DOST Negros Island Region, Dr. Leah J. Buendia, DOST Undersecretary for Research & Development, and Engr. Sancho A. Mabborang, DOST Undersecretary for Regional Operations, also shared their messages of support. This was followed by a message of commitment from University President Dr. Noel Marjon E. Yasi.
DOST Secretary Dr. Renato U. Solidum, Jr., the keynote speaker of the event, challenged local industries, researchers, and students in the Negros Island Region to maximize its potential as new established region. “Ipakita ninyo na mag-stand-up ang inyong region.”
Solidum assured that DOST, through its regional and provincial science and technology offices, including its 18 partner agencies, will continue to support NORSU's endeavors.
Following the program was the ribbon-cutting, unveiling of MEIC markers, and blessing of the MEIC. Afterward is the facility tour led by CIT Dean Dr. Herminio Tinguban. The various newly acquired equipment in the center includes a plasma cutting machine, horizontal bandsaw, sheet metal roller, hydraulic shearing machine, electric hoist, MIG welding machine, TIG welding machine, hydraulic press brake, computer.
Other officials from the Negros Oriental State University were Vice President Merivic G. Catada, for Administration and Finance, Vice President Edwin Romano, Jr., for Research, Innovation, Development and Extension, Vice President for Academic Affairs Rose Marie T. Pinili, deans, heads of the different university offices, members of the faculty and staff. Other participants came from different sectors of the community.
